Growing since 1993.

Vacant for nearly 20 years, these lots were brought back to life in 1993 thanks to neighbors, the North West Central Park Multiblock Association, and Operation Green Thumb—the largest community gardening program in the country. In 1998, dedicated Garden members successfully rallied to have the space officially recognized as a New York City park, protecting it from commercial development for good. In 2025, the Friends of West 104th Street Community Garden nonprofit was officially incorporated to support the governance and growth of the garden.

The East Garden invites you to relax beneath a shady gazebo, enjoy two thriving peach trees, and gather in an open space perfect for meetings, celebrations, and performances. The West Garden features a generous communal herb garden, a welcoming barbecue patio, and a beautiful rose arbor honoring Jesse Crawford, one of the Garden’s founding organizers. Both gardens offer abundant communal beds lovingly tended together by members, along with individual plots for personal planting.

Today, West 104th Garden is home to a vibrant community of more than 50 households and is supported by Green Thumb. Membership is open to all New York City residents—come grow with us!
